Pocket DMX is a live control application for DMX controlled systems. This easy to use hand held DMX control console gives you a remote patchable control system in the palm of your hand. You can use it on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad when connected via a standard wireless router to the BCi Pocket Console® DMX NETport™.
You have 36 patchable channels of level control. Each DMX address can be patched to any channel. You can patch all 512 DMX addresses and any channel can control from 0 to all 512 addresses. There is also a dimmer and channel check function with the output level selectable by the user.
The BCi Pocket Console® DMX NETport™ allows merging of your existing console data with simultaneous input from Pocket DMX as well as having a DMX pass-through port. Merging is on a highest takes precedence (HTP) basis.
Pocket DMX offers:
• Automatic connection to the Pocket Console® DMX NETport™
• All 512 DMX addresses
• 36 Patchable Channels
• Dimmer and Channel Check with Solo option
• Grand Master
• Bump Channel to Bump level setting

Fantastic! If you go in with the right expectations. (No, it is not a HOG)
Overall a wonderful product! The combination of a NETport and an iOS device is great in the right application. I used this setup on a commercial shooting high speed. We needed to dim the extreme light levels during setup and then bring up levels for shooting. That is pretty much it. Maybe set some varying levels between a couple of channels. Even a two scene board would have been more than needed. I would have been happy with a Pocket Console from Baxter if it had a grand master. Of course, it is tough to walk around a film set with a wired device so it would have needed to land in a corner.
The use of the iApp allowed all the technicians to be working the set. No one had to man the board as we all had a board in our pockets. It is also nice that when the set rapidly changes directions all you have to do is move to a better vantage to see the lights you are effecting. The board comes with you as it is in your pocket always.
As long as the user does not put the setup into the wrong application with grandiose expectations I think this is going to be a very well received product.
Extremely simple interface. All technicians can understand the controls in seconds.
Extreme portability on set.
Most everyone in film already has an iOS device on them.
Can take a moment to respond if opening iOS device up from lock.
Tough to control small changes on small touchscreen. (This would not be a problem if using an iPad, but the iPhone and iPod are what the app is natively designed for. Also, who wants to carry an iPad all day?)
Very limited configuration options. Like no cross fade, scene presets, etc. (See also Pros 1 and 2)
Not so good to use multiple iOS controllers. Operates on a LTP basis and if the channel faders and patch are not set the same between devices there can be some negative turning the lights off consequences. We quickly decided to use a single iOS device (iPod Touch) and pass it to whomever should be "manning the board" on set.
Amazing tool for LDs but more creative applications await...

The unit and software go together and setup so quickly, I was absolutely amazed at how easy the process was. The directions are very easy to follow and the software is so basic, its hard to get stuck. The patchability of all 512 channels in the universe was very fluid. I tested the unit with conventional fixtures on a dimmer as well as moving head intelligent lights with over 16 channels in their profile. When you take 2 movers and patch their respective pan/tilt channels to a fader on the pocket console app, both move with smooth synchronicity and are VERY responsive to your touch on the fader.
I tried to make the unit crash as much as I could. I would disconnect power to the interface, put the iphone in sleep mode, take a call during a program, make a call, power off the phone and disable/enable WIFI multiple times. The unit kept going and I am VERY impressed. This is a great tool for any lighting designer as well as someone looking to control an event with an iPad or iPod.
This thing rocks!

I am amazed at the range on this device, even with a standard consumer grade Cisco 160N router. I was able to use this all over the Staples Center, inside the bowl, full bars everywhere. This being with the router living under the NBA All-Star stage on the north end of the arena and walking the entire seating area. No matter where I was in the bowl, I could use the device and manipulate dimmers. Even walking out toward the Concourse through the vomitories, I still had connectivity. Once in the Concourse, the signal dropped, but that is to be expected. Upon returning into the bowl, the I-Touch and NET-Port DMX picked up right where left off without so much as a burp. Re-acquisition of signal was only a matter of seconds upon entering the bowl again. Simply outstanding.
My disclaimer is that I am the Baxter in Baxter Controls, Inc. However, I am also a Production Electrician and for that purpose, this device is priceless.
